Did you go to summer camp? What is your favorite memory/story? If you didn't go to camp, do you feel like you missed out?

I never had the opportunity to go to camp. I don't feel like I missed out on much. Jodi went to church camp one year (maybe two) with the neighbor kids. Tracy and I raided her room. We listened to all of her records and choreographed a heart-warming dance to "Papa Don't Preach." We probably read her journals and her Sweet Valley High Books. She was not happy when she returned. However, if I remember correctly, she introduced me to the Violent Femmes upon her return.
What are you most looking forward to in August?
August is all about fun. I have several things to look forward to in August. First, we leave in 9 days for a 2 week vacation in Michigan. We'll be staying in the same city and hotel that we did last year since Ben again will be training for work. It'll be 2 weeks of water park fun along with some mini-golf and a quick trip to Mackinaw Island. Then we come back home for 2 days before heading to South Dakota. We are going with the Smith family--they have 5 kids, so it will definitely be fun. We have plans to visit Mount Rushmore, Wounded Knee and of course, Wall Drug. After 5 days with the Smiths and South Dakota, we'll return to spend a day at the MN State Fair and then a day of rest before school starts.
What do you find interesting or unique about your family history?
As Jodi promised:
1. My great-great grandpa Finken was killed when his horse "took fright" and threw him from his wagon.
2. My great aunt, Olivia, died at the age of 8 from diphtheria.
3. My great-grandmother died a few months after giving birth. After her death, my grandfather along with his siblings spent some time in a orphanage because my great-grandfather couldn't support all the kids.
4. Rumor has it that when my great grandmother died, Olivia was exhumed so the two could be buried together. I have yet to find any documentation, but I haven't looked that hard.
5. I have a great-great aunt who spent some time in a mental hospital paranoid about bootleggers.
Inspired by my Aunt Anna, I have been researching my family tree since I was about 19. Since I've been in school I haven't been actively researching as much. However, the kids are now becoming more interested, so I took them to the history center to dig up death certificates. They are excited about our next trip when we will focus on newspaper obituaries.
What would make you question a friendship?

If they vote republican. I have to like that person a whole lot in order to overcome my bias against conservatives.
What's on your "To-Do" list today? What are you most looking forward to and what are you most dreading?
1. Wishing Kelli a happy birthday
2. Wishing Jodi a happy birthday
3. Making sure I post something on vox related to Jodi and Kelli's birthday.
4. Worrying all day long about the presents I bought for Jodi and Kelli
5. Going home and baking a birthday cake for Jodi and Kelli
6. Hosting BBQ for Jodi and Kelli's birthday party
There is more I have to do today, but I must stop at 6 because it's the six day of the six month and that my friends, is Jodi and Kelli's birthday. I'm looking forward to the food. Dreading the present part. Happy Birthday!
Have you ever voted outside your own party? Why or why not?

Yes, in 1994 I voted for Arne Carlson for governor. I was still new to the whole political scene. I think it was the first time I actually voted. I was happy with the progress MN was making and believed Carlson was a good Governor. To this day, I don't regret that vote for many reasons, but here is just one:

What's the best thing about your mom?
I love my Mom's attitude. A favorite story circulating about my Mom is when she told the police that she wasn't going anywhere because she had "her shoes off and was in for the night." Apparently, when she went to pay for gas at the gas station they had forgotten to charge her, so they called the police to go get the money from her. The officer wanted my Mom to go back and pay the gas station that night. She told the officer that it was the gas station's fault, she had tried to pay for it that night, so now they can wait until tomorrow. And they let her wait until the next day. Only my Mom would stand up like that and get her way.
I love you Mom! Happy Mother's Day.
