I love March. Not only do I get to indulge in delicious Shamrock Shakes almost daily, but it's also the month that celebrates my profession.
In support of social workers everywhere, please take a minute to ask your Representative to co-sponsor the Social Work Reinvestment Initiative to establish the Social Work Reinvestment Commission to provide independent counsel to Congress on policy issues associated with the recruitment, retention, research, and reinvestment in the profession of social work.
Which "political issue" affects you most in your day-to-day life?
Health care. Every day I deal with people who have insurance problems, lack prescription drug coverage, or are worried about their high co-pays/deductibles. On the home front, I worry about family members who don't have coverage or have to pay an enormous amount of money for COBRA coverage. For the most part, my family and the people I work with are lucky because they live in Minnesota. We have several governmental safety nets for those who are not insured and the company I work for offers programs for those who are not eligible for insurance, but this is not the norm in the United States. I've seen Sicko. I know Michael Moore's biases. Despite his one-sided portrayal of the health care system, he's right, the system in the United States is broken. I've worked with people who are from Wisconsin or North Dakota and it's frustrating knowing that there is nothing out there available to them--no emergency insurance, no prescriptions, no rehab, no doctor to follow up. I hope this year--this election--things will be different. We need to stop focusing on the divisive issues of abortion and immigration and start working on solutions to the many important issues we face in this world.
Anyone who knows me, knows how much I love any day in which I get to vote. On my way to work this morning, there were people rallying for Obama. It brought tears to my eyes. I love the election process, but even more, I love to see people actively engaged in the political process. I even helped a Republican find her caucus site. This is the first time I've ever participated in the caucus process (I'm not sure why I never did before). It was amazingly busy. We were there at 7:15PM and they were already out of ballots. Now, it's all about watching the results come in.
This email just came in: ericka -- Results will be coming in until late tonight, but we did just learn one piece of great news. Thanks to you, we're projected to win Minnesota. I'll be in touch again later tonight when we have results from more states. Barack
Regardless of political affiliation, I hope everyone votes today! Of course, I hope everyone votes Democrat, but I can't have my cake and eat it too.
I hate that Mark Kennedy. He's been my arch nemesis since his election to the house in 2000. Now he's running for senator. Because Bushy's approval ratings are down and the Republican party is struggling, Mark is trying to separate himself from the party. He runs these ads which show how he's not a party guy, but votes with the Republican party 95% of the time. Ugh! I will die if he's elected.
This article is older, but still funny and interesting about Mark's big campaign.
